Calendars and dates
Alper leaves for summer vacation on a Saturday and comes home 30 days later. What day of the week does he come home, and how do you name that day so nobody mixes it up with another?
Where you are 13 in Time and money
Why this exists
Alper is planning his family’s summer vacation, and Mirri and Coby are reading the school year calendar that came home in their backpacks. The vacation is “thirty days”, but which thirty? School starts again “in August”, but on which day, and is it a Monday?
Counting days one by one works for a few days and breaks down for a few hundred. A calendar fixes this. It groups the days into weeks, months and years, gives each group a name, and so gives every single day its own name: its date. With dates, two people can agree on a day months ahead, count how far apart two days are, and work out the day of the week without a long count.
Definition
A calendar groups days in three ways at once.
- A week is 7 days, named Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The names repeat in the same order forever.
- A month is 28, 29, 30 or 31 days. There are 12 months in a year.
- A year is 365 days, or 366 days in a leap year.
| Month | Days | Month | Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 31 | July | 31 |
| February | 28, or 29 in a leap year | August | 31 |
| March | 31 | September | 30 |
| April | 30 | October | 31 |
| May | 31 | November | 30 |
| June | 30 | December | 31 |
A date names one day by its month, its day of the month and its year: July 4, 2027. In the United States it is written in numbers as month/day/year, so July 4, 2027 is 7/4/2027. Many other countries write day/month/year, where 7/4/2027 means the 7th of April. Writing the month as a word removes any doubt.
A year is a leap year when its number is a multiple of 4, except a century year (one ending in 00), which is a leap year only when it is a multiple of 400. A leap year gets one extra day, February 29.
Intuition
Remembering the months
The month lengths look random, and nobody works them out; people remember them. One way is the old rhyme: “Thirty days hath September, April, June and November. All the rest have thirty-one, except February alone.” Another uses your knuckles. Make two fists side by side and touch the knuckles and the dips between them from left to right, naming the months. January lands on a knuckle, February in a dip, March on a knuckle, and so on. July lands on the last knuckle of the first fist and August on the first knuckle of the second. Every knuckle month has 31 days; every dip month has 30, except February. Both are memory aids only. The table above is the fact.
Weeks are rows
A calendar page is a grid with one column for each weekday. Each row is one week.
Going down one row moves 7 days later and lands in the same column, so the same weekday. That is why the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th of July 2027 are all Thursdays: each is 7 more than the last. Any jump by a whole number of weeks keeps the weekday. Only the leftover days, the ones that do not make a whole week, move you along.
So to find the weekday a number of days later, divide by 7. The quotient counts whole weeks, which change nothing, and the remainder says how many weekdays to step forward. The remainder here has a meaning of its own, as in Remainders and what they mean.
Why leap years
A year is meant to be one trip of Earth around the Sun, and that trip takes about 365 and a quarter days. A calendar of 365 days would slip a quarter of a day behind each year, a whole day every 4 years, and after a few hundred years summer would fall in the months of spring. Adding one day every fourth year catches the quarters up.
The trip is in fact a little shorter than 365 and a quarter days, so a leap day every 4 years adds slightly too much. Skipping it in three century years out of every four fixes most of that. Calendars with a leap day every four years are very old; the century rule came later, with the calendar most of the world uses now, often called the Gregorian calendar.
Results
- 1 week = 7 days. A whole number of weeks later is the same weekday.
- A year is 365 days (366 in a leap year). January through December have 31, 28 or 29, 31, 30, 31, 30, 31, 31, 30, 31, 30, 31 days.
- Leap years: a multiple of 4 is a leap year, except a century year, which must be a multiple of 400. 2028 is a leap year, 1900 is not, and 2000 is.
- Days later: divide the number of days by 7; step forward by the remainder.
- Next year: the same date falls one weekday later the next year, or two weekdays later when a February 29 comes in between.
Why it is true
A whole week brings back the same weekday, because the names repeat every 7 days. Any number of days is some whole weeks plus a remainder smaller than 7, so only the remainder moves the weekday.
A year that is not a leap year has
days: 52 whole weeks and 1 day more. From one date to the same date a year later the weeks change nothing, and the 1 extra day moves the weekday one step. When February 29 is in between, the count is 366 = 52 \times 7 + 2, and the weekday moves two steps.
To test a year for a multiple of 4, look at its last two digits only. 100 is a multiple of 4, so the hundreds and thousands are always whole groups of 4, and only the last two digits can leave a remainder (Listing multiples). The year 2032 ends in 32 = 4 \times 8, so it is a multiple of 4.
Worked examples
Writing the first day of school
Mirri’s school calendar says the first day of school is 8/26/2027. Write it with the month as a word. Then write October 3, 2027, in numbers.
SolutionIn the United States the first number is the month and the second is the day. Month 8 is August, counting January as 1, so 8/26/2027 is August 26, 2027. October is month 10, so October 3, 2027 is 10/3/2027.
Two summer months
Alper’s family will be away for all of July and all of August. How many days is that?
SolutionJuly is the last knuckle on the first fist and August the first knuckle on the second, so both are 31-day months, two long months in a row. Together they make 31 + 31 = 62 days.
Which years are leap years?
Which of 2032, 2050, 2100 and 2400 are leap years?
Solution2032 is not a century year, so it only needs to be a multiple of 4. Its last two digits are 32 = 4 \times 8, so 2032 is a leap year.
2050 ends in 50, and 50 \div 4 = 12 \text{ R } 2, so it is not a multiple of 4. Not a leap year.
2100 is a century year, so the rule asks for a multiple of 400. 4 \times 400 = 1{,}600 and 5 \times 400 = 2{,}000, so 2{,}100 is 100 past a multiple of 400. Not a leap year, even though it is a multiple of 4.
2400 = 6 \times 400, so it is a leap year.
Thirty days after a Saturday
Alper’s vacation starts on Saturday, June 12, 2027, and he comes home 30 days later. On what date and what day of the week does he come home?
SolutionJune has 30 days. From June 12 to June 30 is 30 - 12 = 18 days, which leaves 30 - 18 = 12 days into July: he comes home July 12.
For the weekday, take out the whole weeks:
Four weeks after a Saturday is a Saturday again. The 2 leftover days go Sunday, then Monday. He comes home on Monday, July 12, 2027.
Summer break, counted
Mirri’s last day of school in 2027 is June 9. School starts again on August 24. How many days after June 9 is August 24?
SolutionCount in pieces that end at the ends of months, so each piece uses one month’s length. From June 9 to June 30 is 30 - 9 = 21 days. All of July adds 31 days. Then August 24 is 24 more days into August. In all,
Check: 76 = 10 \times 7 + 6, and June 9, 2027 is a Wednesday. Six weekdays past Wednesday is Tuesday, and August 24, 2027 is indeed a Tuesday.
A birthday that moves
Coby’s birthday, March 5, fell on a Friday in 2027. On what weekday does it fall in 2028 and in 2029?
SolutionFrom March 5, 2027 to March 5, 2028 the year passes through February 2028. 2028 ends in 28 = 4 \times 7, so it is a leap year, and February 29, 2028 lies in between. That year of birthdays is 366 = 52 \times 7 + 2 days, so the weekday moves two steps: Friday to Sunday.
From March 5, 2028 to March 5, 2029 there is no February 29, since 2029 is not a multiple of 4. That is 365 = 52 \times 7 + 1 days, one step: Sunday to Monday.
The hundredth day
The year 2027 begins on Friday, January 1, and is not a leap year. Mirri’s class marks the 100th day of the year. What date is it, and what day of the week?
SolutionAdd up whole months until the total is close to 100:
| Through the end of | Days so far |
|---|---|
| January | 31 |
| February | 31 + 28 = 59 |
| March | 59 + 31 = 90 |
The 100th day is 100 - 90 = 10 days into April: April 10.
January 1 is the 1st day, so the 100th day is 99 days after it. 99 = 14 \times 7 + 1, and one step past Friday is Saturday. The 100th day is Saturday, April 10, 2027. In a leap year February has one more day, and the 100th day would be April 9.
Boundaries
- “Days after” and “how many days”. August 24 is 76 days after June 9; that count does not include June 9 itself. A camp that runs from June 9 to June 11 lasts 3 days if you count the first and the last day both, though June 11 is only 2 days after June 9. Say which you mean.
- Months cannot be turned into days by one fact. “Three months” is 89 to 92 days, depending on which months. Count with the real month lengths.
- The leap year rule has its exception. A multiple of 4 is not enough for a century year: 1900 and 2100 are not leap years.
- Number dates depend on the country. Month/day/year is the US order. When the reader may use day/month/year, write the month as a word.
- The weekday rule needs whole days. Dividing by 7 works for counts of days, not for months or years directly, since those have no fixed number of weeks.
Where this goes next
Days, weeks and years are the large end of Units of time. How long it is from one clock time to another is Elapsed time, and Twenty four hour time and crossing midnight gives each hour of the day its own number. Different places on Earth are on different dates at the same moment, and the International Date Line is where the date changes. The remainder trick for weekdays is an early taste of counting in a cycle, where only the remainder matters, an idea that grows much later into Modular arithmetic.

Reasoning
- Explain why a date falls one weekday later from one year to the next, when no February 29 comes in between.
- Coby says 1900 was a leap year because 1900 is a multiple of 4. Explain what is wrong.
- In a year that is not a leap year, February 1 is a Sunday. Explain why February fills exactly four rows of the calendar, and why no other month ever can.
Answers
- 3/14/2028. The month comes first: March is month 3.
- November 7, 2027. Month 11 is November.
- April, June, September and November, the dips other than February.
- 92 days. 30 + 31 + 31 = 92.
- 4 weeks 3 days. 31 \div 7 = 4 \text{ R } 3.
- 91 days. February 2028 has 29 days, so 31 + 29 + 31 = 91.
- The 6th of May. Day/month/year reads the first number as the day.
- Yes. 2036 is not a century year and ends in 36 = 4 \times 9.
- No. 26 \div 4 = 6 \text{ R } 2, so 2026 is not a multiple of 4.
- 1800 is not: it is a century year and 1800 \div 400 = 4 \text{ R } 200. 1600 is: 1600 = 4 \times 400.
- 2044, 2048, 2052, 2056 and 2060. The multiples of 4 go up by 4 from 2044, and none is a century year.
- 366 days in 2040, a leap year since 40 = 4 \times 10. 365 days in 2300: a century year, and 2300 \div 400 = 5 \text{ R } 300.
- Friday. 10 = 1 \times 7 + 3, and three steps past Tuesday is Friday.
- Sunday. 25 = 3 \times 7 + 4, and four steps past Wednesday is Sunday.
- Saturday. 9 = 1 \times 7 + 2, and two steps back from Monday is Saturday.
- Monday, July 26. 10 + 16 = 26, and July has 31 days. 16 = 2 \times 7 + 2, so two steps past Saturday.
- 26 days. May 20 to May 31 is 31 - 20 = 11 days, then 15 more: 11 + 15 = 26.
- 59 days. 31 - 4 = 27 days to the end of July, 31 for August, 1 more: 27 + 31 + 1 = 59.
- 12 days. June 21 through June 30 is 30 - 21 + 1 = 10 days, and July 1 and 2 make 10 + 2 = 12.
- Thursday. December 31 is 364 days after January 1, and 364 = 52 \times 7, whole weeks.
- July 19. Through June is 31 + 28 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 = 181 days, and 200 - 181 = 19.
- Tuesday, then Thursday. 365 = 52 \times 7 + 1 moves Monday one step to Tuesday; 366 = 52 \times 7 + 2 moves Tuesday two steps to Thursday.
- From a date to the same date a year later is 365 days. 365 = 52 \times 7 + 1: the 52 whole weeks bring back the same weekday, and the 1 extra day moves it one step.
- 1900 is a century year, and a century year must be a multiple of 400. 1900 \div 400 = 4 \text{ R } 300, so 1900 was not a leap year.
- That February has 28 = 4 \times 7 days. Starting on Sunday, each row holds Sunday through Saturday, so four full rows hold days 1 to 28 with nothing left over. Every other month has more than 28 days, and a February in a leap year has 29, so some day always spills into a fifth row.
